How to Find Repossessed Vehicles to Buy

Introduction

Repossessed cars are no longer all that hard to find. Newspapers and web searches will turn up a number of results. Repo cars are usually cars that were impounded by the police or collected by the bank from people who couldn’t pay their loans back. Repossessed cars are sold at reduced prices so they can be in demand. Repo cars can be sold by public banks or in private auctions. Just be careful to inspect the car well so that you do not get ripped off.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Step 1

Locate cars that have been repossessed before they are given over to be sold at a public auction or sale. Try calling your local banks or credit union. Often they can give you a recent list of cars that were repossessed.

Step 2

Check the newspaper, websites, and the phone book for repo cars. Try looking in the newspaper under the auto classifieds column for public auctions. Search the eBay motors site for cheap repo cars.

Step 3

Figure out how you are going to pay for the car. Repo car sellers want to complete sales quickly so you need to have either proper financing, cash, or certified funds easily accessible. Apply to be approved from your bank or credit union before you try to buy a car.

Step 4

Look up how much a repo car should cost in the model that you want. You can find this information in the NADA Guide or the Kelley Blue Book. Repo cars should be much cheaper than new cars.

Step 5

Examine in person the car that you have chosen. Check its mileage. Get a vehicle history report from Car Fax or Auto Check so you can see whether the car has been in an accident or not. You should also take the car to be checked by a mechanic. If everything checks out, purchase the car.

Tip

Try to take the car for a test drive before you purchase it.

Warning

Read the fine print of the contract that will make you the new owner of a repo car because the contract can include hidden fees, warranty information, and other problems.
