How to Install Gas Space Heaters Tips

Introduction

Gas space heaters are very useful. They can provide extra heat on very cold days and they can be counted on during power outages. Gas space heaters can help you save money because they run on gas, a cheaper energy source than electricity. Be sure to use your heater in a well ventilated room. Follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions when installing your gas heater and be sure to adhere to any of your town’s building codes.

Difficulty: Moderately Difficult

Things You'll Need:

- Stud finder

- Piping

- Thread sealant

- Pressure gauge

- Spray bottle filled with dish soap and water

Instructions

Step 1

Buy a heater. Do not purchase a heater that is too big for the room you will be placing it in. Check the heater’s box for a sizing table or ask a sales assistant at the store for their help.

Step 2

Check that there will be plenty of fresh air and ventilation in the room that will house the space heater. Put the heater in a room that has windows. Keep the windows open about half an inch when running the heater.

Step 3

Place the heater on an even surface. The heater needs to be out of pedestrian’s way. Keep heaters away from curtains, walls, decorations, and furniture. Put the heater close to an outlet because most heaters need to be plugged in.

Step 4

Use a stud-finder to search the wall for a stud or check the floor for a joist. Attach the mounting brackets that came with the heater to the stud or floor joist.

Step 5

Shut off your gas supply. Find piping in your basement or a crawl space. Install gas supply piping by “T”ing into the existing piping. Install a shut-off valve and sediment drain into the piping. Apply a small amount of pipe thread sealant to the pipe. Use a sealant that works with your fuel type. Check that the pressure coming from your gas supply is not too high using a pressure gauge.

Step 6

Inspect the new piping for leaks by spraying a mixture of dish soap and water onto each joint. If you spot growing bubbles on a joint, you will find a leak in that location. The leak needs to be sealed.

Step 7

Attach your heater to the gas piping while the heater is off. Check the pipes for leaks again. You may want a building inspector to do a final check of the heater and the piping before you use your new heater.

Tips

Shut the door to the room that the heater is in to keep the room warm.

Purchase a heater that has all the current safety features such as the ability to turn itself off if it gets knocked over. You will know that the heater’s safety features are up to date if you see the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label on the heater.

Warnings

Badly crafted or operated heaters can cause fires so be very careful when using a gas space heater.

Never leave a heater on while you leave the room or go to sleep.
