How to Troubleshoot an Exercise Bike

Introduction

Stationary bikes are a type of exercise equipment. They are easily maintained and tend to have fewer problems when kept clean and lubricated. It is not difficult to spot and fix problems with your stationary bike. Stationary bikes sustain fewer problems than regular bicycles because they remain indoors and are not subject to outdoor conditions. Every stationary bike model is different so refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to fix issues with your specific bike.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

- Cleaners and lubricant

- New hub

- Rotating brush chain cleaning tool

- New pedals

- Pedal wrench

- Fine-grit sandpaper

Instructions

Step 1

Clean and lubricate the gears that control the resistance/intensity mechanism of the stationary bike. This will fix bikes that do not change intensity settings easily. Follow manufacturer instructions to be sure that you fix this problem properly.

Step 2

Check for a wobbly resistance wheel. If your bike has this issue, replace the bike’s hub. You can change the hub by loosening the resistance machinery and removing the wheel and the hub bolt. You can then take off the old hub and put in a new one. Put the hub bolt and wheel back into place and tighten the resistance mechanism.

Step 3

Keep the chain clean. A dirty and dry chain is noisy and makes the bike hard to ride. Use a rotating brush chain cleaning tool to clean the chain.

Step 4

Replace won pedals. Change the pedals when they are not at 90 degrees to the crankarm. You should also change the pedals if you feel a bump in the pedal stroke. Remove the pedals with a pedal wrench and put new ones in their place.

Step 5

Remove your handlebars and seat and clean them well. Use fine-grit sandpaper on mating surfaces to build up the grip. This step will help the handlebars and seat not move around while you are riding your bike.

Tip

Keep your bike clean to avoid having to make future repairs.
